About Us
Checkmat Knoxville is a place for everyone. We have built a team of qualified professionals who know what it takes to thrive through BJJ lessons. They are equipped to teach all types of students – including competitors, hobbyists, and entire families. The experience is balanced with a happy, inspiring, and enthusiastic mentality brought in by our staff. They are patient and thorough in everything they do. Our coaches keep our students accountable at all times. We make sure they value consistency and understand they will grow if they stay the course. History
Our history brings together our story as a part of the Checkmat organization and as a Knoxville Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy. Checkmat was founded in 2008 by Leo Vieira. Checkmat Knoxville was later opened by owner Kevin James Gonzalez aka Professor “KJ”. A 3rd Degree Black Belt who has trained for over 20 years, Professor KJ opened Checkmat Knoxville to share his passion of Jiu-Jitsu to others – a martial art that he says saved his life. His love for the sport has led him to many great things beyond our academy, including becoming BJJ No Gi Absolute World Champion. As the Checkmat organization grows, Professor KJ hopes his Knoxville location will as well. His goal is to help as many people as possible – saving lives and helping people with their health and self-confidence.

We strive to dominate on and off the mat. On the mat, we have multiple world champions leading classes, looking to build more world champions.
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy doesn’t just teach you how to grapple and strike. You will receive a life-altering experience, setting you on a path to accomplish all your goals on and off the mat.
Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program is split between four different BJJ classes. But that’s not all! We have a total of NINE different martial arts programs, including MMA and Aerobics!
We are not just Jiu-Jitsu training practitioners or part-time martial artists. Martial arts is a major part of our lives – something that we truly believe in and care about!
